Department of English

In accordance with the vision and mission of the Nair Service Society, the N.S.S. College for Women has taken as its mission, the goal of providing holistic education to women. The Department of English follows the mission to the letter by addressing two major areas that all educationalists agree are those that need closer attention

  • Remedial English and Spoken English.

The Department which had been functioning since the inception of the college became a full-fledged one with an Undergraduate Programme in English Language and Literature which was started in 1999.

The Under Graduate Program Course under the CBCS System offers Journalismas a complementary course, which give s a cutting edge advantage to our student community in the present career scenario.

The Post Graduate Programme in English Language and Literature started in 2013 is a major landmark in our quest for excellence.

The Department maintains a good track record of achievement in terms of pass percentage in University examinations (far above the University average), student progression, employability and placement profile etc.

Activities

Over the years, the Department of English has organized several co-curricular extension programmes to complement the classroom experience. These programmes include poetry workshops, introduction to authors, dialogue of cultures, literary expo, short term courses, counselling sessions, lectures by invited academics, journalists, civil servants and the like.

2012-2013: A two-day interdisciplinary seminar on Poetry and Translation: Agony and Ecstasy was organized in collaboration with the Department of Malayalam on 6-7 March, 2013.

The English Association Inauguration Programme was organized on 12 March 2013, and the inaugural lecture was delivered by Sri K. Padma Kumar IPS, IG Central Range, Ernakulam.

A Counselling session on Stress Management was organized the same day (12 March 2013) with Dr. Justin Padamadan, Clinical Psychologist as the resource person.

2013-2014: On 21 November 2013, the newly sanctioned Post Graduate Course in English was inaugurated by Prof. Prasanna Kumar, Education Secretary, NSS Colleges’ Central Committee.

Other student achievements:

Several prizes and accolades have been won by students of English in co-curricular cultural, literary and sports events in intra university, inter university and other competitions.

Hima Chandran (2011-14) – directed a short film “Nishadam” and represented India in the Taiwan International Children’s Film Festival held at Taipei City, Taiwan in 2012.

Faculty Profile

The department of English has a well qualified and dedicated faculty. Five of the ten permanent members of the faculty are Ph. D holders of which two members are recognized as post doctoral fellows.The faculty research and publication profile of the department continues to be a dynamic one.
