The goal and objective of Botany department is to frame out a promising young generation with academic as well as non-academic efficiency.The success of this attempt depends on creating opportunities to expose their hidden talents and to involve them in more extension activities. This will increase their ability to face the society in future with confidence. Women education and empowerment is the main aim of this college and we try our level best to contribute our share to achieve this goal. With the facility is available we are trying to our best. A well maintained Medicinal garden named “Maruthwa” with many medicinally valuable plants can be seen in our department campus. We regularly conduct various training programmes to enhance students over all development. We started to conserve germplasm of water plants in our college premises. We maintain a research and tissue culture lab to enhance research activities in students. The teachers of the department are regularly engaged in research activities and have published many research papers. They regularly refresh and update their knowledge by attending seminars, conferences, workshops and training programmes at national and international levels, and assess themselves by taking feedback from students.
Botany department is one of the oldest departments in our college. The first degree course in Botany started in 1955, when the college was functioning atPerunthanniAmmaveedu. The sanctioned strength was thirty-two. At first there were only two teaching staff; Smt. B. SaraswathyAmma and Smt.B. Saraswathy Devi. Smt. B. SaraswathyAmma was the head of the department. In 1959, Smt. B. Indira Bai joined as lecturer. In 1964, Smt. JayalekshmiAmma and in 1967 Smt. T.K. Padmaja Devi also joined as teaching faculty.
Dept. Of Botany offer Core course with Biotechnology and Nanobiotechnology as elective paper and Complementary course for both Zoology and Home Science Core students. We teach “Mushroom Cultivation and Marketing” as Open course for S5 students. We conduct extension activities under Nature club for S3/S4 students.
For the past 5 years Dept. of Botany acquired University ranks and first positions in University examinations with an average pass percentage of 94. Our Department student bagged the first place in Kerala University’s first B. Sc. Degree (Botany Core) examination under CBCS System. Currently our student holds fifth place in B. Sc. Botany Degree Examination conducted in April, 2016.
