Department of Physical Education
The college prides itself on its excellent reputation and record in Physical Education and sport. The Department of Physical Education is old as the college, has been able to etch out a name for itself among the big achievers in the field of sports and games. The college produced an array of high ranking sportspersons of state, national and international repute. The department has played a remarkable role in promoting the cause of Physical Education by fostering the knowledge and practice of sport. Physical Education develops pupils’ physical competence and confidence and their ability to use these to perform in a range of activities. It promotes skilfulness, physical development and knowledge of the body in action. The department provides opportunities for pupils to be creative, competitive, cooperative and face up to different challenges as individuals and in groups and teams. It promotes positive attitudes toward healthy and active lifestyles. Pupils learn how to think in different ways to suit a wide variety of creative, competitive, cooperative and challenging activities. They learn how to plan, perform and evaluate actions, ideas and performances to improve their aptitudes, abilities, preferences and make choices about how to get involved in lifelong physical activity. Our teams continue to maintain our tradition of excellence in the field of sports and games and contributed extensively in winning laurels to the college. This year 11 of our sportspersons has represented Kerala or India in National and International competitions and 15 has represented Kerala University. Ever since its inception it has been conducting many Inter – Collegiate and Open Tournaments in the field of sports. The department has multifarious activities. We see Physical Education as a vital part of the education experience as a whole.
Infrastructure & Facilities
The college Fitness Centre is a fully equipped is offering free weight, plate-loaded and machine lifting opportunities as well as a variety of aerobic machines. Since 2003, our Fitness Centre has been the premier spot on campus for getting, and staying, in shape. Available to the College community free of charge , the center is open six days a week. The main exercise room features cardio machines, including treadmills, bikes, and elliptical trainers. Two circuits of strength training machines, as well as a variety of free weights, allow students to shape fitness regimen .The Fitness Center also has two Multy gyms, and a change room. In addition, our students take instruction classes on yoga and aerobics. Fitness Centre is clean, comfortable, and state-of-the-art. Users have access to a variety of strength and cardiovascular equipments. The students utilize the fitness centre in the mornings and in the evenings to make themselves fit to their assigned duties in the best possible way with interest and enthusiasm
The Kerala Sports Council has recognised our college as an excellent training centre for Volleyball& Kabaddi according sports hostels. Fifteen students are included in the scheme.
Sports For All
The department caters to the needs of all students by providing assistance to participate in sports activities on all days both morning and evening.
The Department also offers, extension services, which include conducting of sports and games and coaching camps. Every year summer coaching camps will be conducted in Kabaddi & Volleyball for school pass outs and our students in May.
TA national workshop on’ Environmental Influences on Physical activity and Nutrition Behaviors ‘ under the patronage of the UGC was organized by the department in association with the Home Science department on January 27 and 28, 2009. Hon. Minister for Sports and Law Sri.M.Vijayakumar, inaugurated the workshop.Two day Regional Seminar On Life Skill Development Through Sports Under the patronage of the UGC was organized by the department of Physical Education on 5th & 6th March 2012.
Every year, college organizes Invitational & university tournaments in the college campus. This year too, the college organized The Kerala University Intercollegiate Women Kabaddi Tournament in November, 2013 in which the college team secured second position
Dr.V.Jayakumar, has presented a paper on ‘Association of Television viewing and Physical activity in School Children’ at the 12th World Sport for All Congress organised by the International Olympic Committee at Genting Highlands, Malaysia in November,2008.Teachers have published books and have many publications in Research Journals
