The Department of English since its inception in 1950 has been an integral part of the college and offers UG(1999), and PG programmes (2013) in English Language and Literature with Journalism as a subsidiary course for the undergraduate programme. The department has organised several value-added courses over the years to hone job-oriented skills, including courses in News reading, TV anchoring and digital journalism. Every year eminent scholars, academicians and writers are invited for expert talks, interactions, and discussions. Community outreach programmes are conducted to inculcate social commitment and responsibility among students. The department's flagship programme, creative writing, is also an elective paper for the undergraduate programme. The aim of this course and the different literary competitions held by the department is to discover the latent creative potential of our students and to fine-tune it. The faculty also organises extension programmes every year, in creative writing, in collaboration with schools in the city to enhance creative writing skills in young learners and to identify budding writers. Students of the department bring laurels to the institution through academic achievements and excellence in cultural as well as creative endeavours. The merit of our students is reflected in the University results with toppers in the years 2007, 2010, 2011, 2014, 2016 and 2022. They also win prizes in university youth festivals, national-level sports events and literary competitions organised as a part of prestigious literary festivals. With a team of dedicated teachers, the department is relentlessly committed to its pursuit of excellence.
