National Service Scheme (NSS)

The National Service Scheme of HHMSPB NSS College for Women plays an important role in developing the personality and overall grooming of the students. NSS takes up various programmes inside and outside the institution aimed at ISR.
It makes its presence felt through many activities conducted in and out of the college. The NSS volunteers are committed, talented and of course the pride of the institution and an asset to society. Regular and special activities are conducted under the guidance of two Programme Officers, Dr. Subha R Nair and Smt Asha Prabhakaran. Many programmes and activities were conducted during the year, including regular activities and special camp activities. It was a year of active participation of NSS volunteers in many seminars and voluntary service programmess conducted in and outside the college. The main activities of NSS during the year are listed below.

Campus Cleaning
  • Blood Donation camps were organized in association with the Sreechithra Institute of Medical Science.
  • A Food festival was organized for raising funds for charity work.
  • Notebooks and writing materials were collected from the students and teachers of the college and given to the poor students in the Govt. U.P School, Karumom.
  • A programme on Drug Abuse was conducted at the MMRHS to make the students aware of the seriousness of the problem.
  • Started collection of money from the students through coin boxes to help the poor and bedridden patients.
  • Started a Palliative care programme in association with Rajeswari Foundation, Jagathy, by which our volunteers are visiting bedridden patients at their homes and spending some time with them. We are also giving 5 kg rice packets to all the patients.
  • Self Defence programme was conducted by which all volunteers were given classes in Karate and self-defense.
  • Volunteers participated in the anti-plastic campaign by the Trivandrum Corporation. Collected plastic waste from the campus, separated plastic bottles and pens, and gave them to the corporation for the installation work.
  • Volunteers participated in the exhibition organized by Trivandrum Corporation for making the public aware of the danger of plastic waste.
  • Conducted a workshop on the reuse of waste materials like plastic, paper, bottles, and clothes, and volunteers learned to make many things and an exhibition was conducted in the college.
  • Volunteers started vegetable cultivation in grow bags.
  • Conducted workshop on making handmade soap and lotion and students made soap and lotion.
    (The soaps and lotion thus made are distributed to the poor free of cost.)
  • Conducted workshop on paper bag, file and envelop making and on that basis we are starting a paper bag making unit in the college. This is to reduce the use of plastic and to encourage students to use paper bags and files. It is also decided that the income from this venture will be given to the students concerned.
  • NSS volunteers have participated as green volunteers of Trivandrum Corporation in the Attukal Pongala festival. They participated in implementing the green protocol and green auditing works. They also distributed pamphlets regarding sound pollution, prepared by Indian Medical Association. Trivandrum Mayor has given our unit a memento in appreciation of our work.
  • Awareness classes on different subjects like Cybercrime, Lifestyle diseases, Legal awareness, preparation for competitive examinations, etcetera were conducted.
  • Clothe bank system was started and clothes are distributed to needy people.
  • Books were collected from students and staff and distributed to tribal schools/hostels.
  • Volunteers visited the nearby colony and distributed pamphlets on lifestyle diseases and interacted with the residents about the problems of health and the danger of excessive use of plastic.
  • A documentary-short film festival was organized in connection with Women’s Day and many relevant short films on women were exhibited.
  • Organized a talk on women’s health on Women’s Day in which Dr. Anupama and Vice President, IMA, and Dr. Sonia, Joint Secretary, IMA participated.
  • One volunteer, Aiswarya M Nair participated in the Pre-RD Camp, Trichy and Gayatri participated in the National Adventure Camp, Shimla
  • Participated in the Digital India Workshop organized by the University of Kerala and Central Govt and our unit won the best unit certificate and our volunteer Nima Anil won the prize for best innovative idea
  • Our Unit was awarded a certificate of appreciation by NSS Cell, the University of Kerala for our activities during the last year. Former volunteer, Anupama G.K got the best volunteer award and Dr. V. Chithra Devi, Programme Officer got a Certificate of Appreciation.
  • Visited Tribal students at Kottoor at their hostel and spent a day with them. Also donated food items, soap made and clothes collected by our volunteers to them.
  • A Palliative O.P Clinic was started with the help of the Rajeswari Foundation for the patients of two wards, Pappanamcode and Karamana. Arrangements are made for weekly O P and home visits, with the help of the Residents Association, Councillor, and medical team from Rajeswari Foundation. The expense will be met by our NSS Unit and volunteers will also help the medical team.
