Home Science, which equips aspirants with a virtual gamut of skills for managing a home and community, is, by definition and design, having interdisciplinary specialties in Food and Nutrition, Child Development and Welfare, Textiles and Apparel Designing, Family Resource Management, Housing, and Interior Designing and Extension and Communication, along with electives and open course. The Department of Home Science was established in 1958, affiliated with the University of Kerala, began in a humble manner under the leadership of an efficient and dynamic visionary, Prof. Chellammal Sethurayar, and served the needs of Pre Degree students. But, since it addressed a felt need in society, it has kept on expanding in the repertoire of the services it is today equipped to render in a professional as well as a practical manner, offering an Undergraduate Program in Home Science. The philosophy of the Department is inclined towards the training of students in the multidisciplinary field of study, which propagate the variety of roles and tasks involving the contemporary family in the community and social life. Consequently, the department of Home Science trains the students in the above broad areas ensuring the production of highly skilled manpower through the adoption of effective techniques of instruction, laboratory practicals, field demonstration, and workshop practices such that our graduates can choose to specialize in any of the relevant disciplines that prepare the scholars to develop themselves with multifold vocational and career opportunities. Today, backed by a competent faculty team, headed by Dr.Sheeja P R and assisted by Dr. Gayathry C P., the department excels in teaching as well as in outreach programs.
